Wondrous Words Wednesday

Wondrous Words Wednesday

My words today are two ice hockey terms, since I am a fan of the N.Y. Rangers, who are in contention for the Stanley Cup.

1. Twig- another name for a hockey stick.

2. Waffle- The goalie's blocker.

  1. I like the new uses for twig and waffle. I hope your Rangers do well.

  2. Hi Mary Ann,

Homonyms have to be one of the stragest phenomenon in the English language, is it any wonder that English is considered to be one of the most difficult languages to learn!

I know of at least two meanings for each of the words you feature, but neither of those would be the definitions you cite, which are totally new to me.

Ice Hockey went through a stage of being very popular here in the UK, although I rarely hear it mentioned these days and I certainly couldn't name any teams!

Great words and Good Luck to the N.Y. Rangers :)

  3. I'm familiar with the words with different meanings. I've never heard them used for ice hockey though.

  4. Those definitions are new to me as well!
