Wondrous Words Wednesday

Wondrous Words Wednesday

Here are my words for today:

1. Popinjay- A vain or conceited person, or one who dresses or behaves extravagantly.

2. Hamsa Hand- An old and still popular apotropaic amulet used for magical protection from the envious or evil eye.

3. Apotropaic- supposedly having the power to avert evil influences or bad luck.

  1. Hi Mary Ann,

Popinjay is a quintessentially English period word, which quite often appears in historical novels, although you would never hear it in conversation these days!

Whilst I am not much into magic or the occult, I have read one very good series of novels, which focuses almost exclusively on the subject, although I have never come across either of your words.

Apotropaic especially, is a great word to have in your language arsenal and anything which can contribute to the change in my current fortunes, would be gratefully received.

Excellent words this week - 'Happy Reading' :)
