Spring of 1921, attorney Adrian de la Noye has to return to Newport,
where he spent his misspent youth, in order to revise a will of a wealthy client. He encounters a woman by the name of Catherine, who he was acquainted with as a young man and is surprised to learn that she is going to be married to his wealthy client.
This story contains a lot of deception, secrets, twists and turns which certainly kept me glued to each page. It was truly a book that makes reading enjoyable.

Scott A. Lerner - The Fraternity of the Soul Eater - Review & Giveaway

It’s been a while since Samuel Roberts was called upon to save mankind, and he’s getting restless. His girlfriend Susan thinks he’s a danger junkie, and he’s worried he has a hero complex. He’s back to his usual small-town lawyerly duties in Champaign-Urbana, handling divorces and helping people beat DUI raps. But then a young fraternity pledge calls. During an initiation ceremony he witnessed the live sacrifice of a young woman, but he had so much alcohol in his system that no one believes him. Except Sam. Lately Egyptian lore has been creeping into his life, his dreams, and his movie preferences, and he’s pretty sure he knows why. Evil is knocking on his door again.
Is the call welcome? Why can’t Sam be satisfied with his comfortable legal practice and gorgeous redheaded girlfriend? Maybe it’s because he knows that, as inadequate as he may feel to the task, he and his friend Bob may be humanity’s only hope against ancient supernatural forces combined with modern genetic engineering. Come hell or high water. Or in this case, the underworld or subterranean pyramids.
The Fraternity of the Soul Eater is the third book in the Samuel Roberts Thriller series, which began with Cocaine Zombies and continued with Ruler of Demons.
My Review
Women are being murdered in an underground pyramid near a college campus.
And Sam is a small time lawyer, hired to look into these bizarre ritualistic killings when a young fraternity pledge turns his fellow brothers in to the police, only to become the focus of the investigation himself. Sam loves danger and situations that take him there and he's totally intrigued by the concept of an evil Egyptian presence in his hometown, so he decides to help the kid.
But Sam's personal demons are quick to resurface. His depression, his reckless behavior, his foundering relationships—his life is turned upside down when he takes the case. And it makes you wonder, do the ends really justify the means?
A suspenseful thriller that grabs you right from the start, it takes you into an ancient world of long held secrets and grotesque murders. A true page turner.

Michael J. McCann - Sorrow Lake - Review & Giveaway

Detective Inspector Ellie March of the Ontario Provincial Police is called in to investigate when a man from the village of Sparrow Lake is found shot to death, execution style, in a farmer's field in rural eastern Ontario.
Leading an inexperienced team of detectives, she probes beneath the wintry surface of the township to discover the victim had a dark secret--one that may endanger others in the community as well.
For young and enthusiastic Detective Constable Kevin Walker, the chance to work with Ellie March is an honour, until the situation turns ugly and unexpected betrayal threatens to destroy his promising career.
My Review
The investigation into the murder at Sorrow Lake proves to be a lesson in crime-solving.
The story takes place in a sleepy, backwoods town in Canada and introduces us to inspector Ellie March, the lead investigator brought in specifically to handle this particular case. She has her job cut out for her when she has to work with a local team who's not as experienced as she is when it comes to murder investigations.
Her new partner, Kevin, is eager to learn from her, even if he can't keep his stomach contents at bay when viewing his very first autopsy.
The book is so well-researched when it comes to police procedure and protocol and I felt myself learning a lot, right along with Kevin.
It's a quality novel to kick off a brand new series, in the tradition of several popular TV shows from BROADCHURCH to FARGO—when a small town gets walloped with a big city punch. It just goes to show that violent crime exists everywhere, even in the quietest of regions.
