Wondrous Words Wednesday

Wondrous Words Wednesday

My words today are taken from Intriguing Words.

Zeitgeist-  The spirit of the time; the general moral, intellectual and cultural climate of an era.

Apophasis- The raising of an issue by claiming not to mention it.

  1. Oh man, I've known people who used apophasis a lot and never knew there was a word for it.

  2. Hi Mary Ann,

I recognise zeitgeist, although I only had a vague idea as to its meaning, so seeing it written down has much more impact for me!

Apophasis it turns out, is generally used in a subversive way, generally as an attack, which makes it a frequently used tactic in political speeches to make an attack on one's opponent, although using apophasis in this way is often considered to be bad form.

Apophasis is also generally known as paralipsis, although I am not sure which one of those two words is the most difficult to say aloud :)

  3. I always associate zeitgeist with Germany and something about WWII- thanks to you, I realize it has a much broader meaning.

  4. I find apophasis very intriguing. I'm sure that has happened to me and I don't even know it.
