Wondrous Words Wednesday

Wondrous Words Wednesday

Taken from Difficult Words:

1. Maar- is a broad, low-relief volcanic crater that is caused by ground water coming into contact with hot lava.

2. Aardwolf- is a striped, hyena-like mammal of South Africa.

3. Wallah- is a person who is associated with a particular work or who performs a specific duty or service.

  1. Hm, I may have seen a maar when we lived in France. Wallah is familiar but I couldn't have defined it.

  2. Hi Mary Ann,

Congratulations on some very difficult and excellent words today.

The only one of your words I didn't know was 'Aardwolf', although I have seen the jackal and hyena, to which it is related.

'Wallah' I know in the context of a 'Punkah Wallah', which I remember from a 1970's English sitcom, called 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum'. A 'punkah' was a ceiling fan and the 'wallah' the person whose job it was to use the pulley system to work it.

'Maar', I have only come across in the last week or so, when watching a television documentary about the eruption of the Icelandic volcano 'Eyjafjallajökull', back in 2010.

A great post this week, thanks for sharing.

  3. Bermudaonion- That's a new name for me too, for a volcanic crater.

    Julia- I agree.

Yvonne- That's some name for a volcano.
