Wondrous Words Wednesday

Wondrous Words Wednesday

Taken from:  Funny Words

1. Allegator- Someone who alleges.

2. Bowyang- A strap that holds the pants legs in place.

3. Canoodle- To hug and kiss.

  1. Allegator is terrific!!! Using that one will really confuse people.

  2. Hi Mary Ann,

What some great words this week. The only one I know is 'canoodle', which you could hear being used quite regularly a few years ago, here in the UK, although I think that it is considered passe these days and has been usurped by more modern words.

I wouldn't have even thought that 'allegator' was a word and I would probably have continued to say 'one who alleges'. I must try to work this one into a conversation, just to see if anyone challenges its validity, so that I can show them that it does in fact have a bona fide definition.

I have seen Australian sheepshearers wearing the string straps, but didn't know that they had a proper name, especially not one as off the wall, as 'bowyang'. Apparently each region has their own name for this strapping ... In Scotland, they are known as 'nicky-tam'... In England, in the county of Cornwall, they used to be known as 'yarks'... Both equally strange words, don't you agree?

Great post and so interesting, thanks,

  3. Allegator is interesting! I thought it had something to do with alligators - wrong!

  4. Never heard of bowyang before. I really like it though, it's fun to say!!

  5. I knew canoodle - my grandmother would use the word when she wanted hugs and kisses. Did not know the other two.

  6. I definitely know canoodle too. Bowyang is tricky, I feel like I've seen it before, when I googled images what I found are what I would have called gaiters. Bowyang is such a weird word though, I like it.

  7. Libby- Me too!

    Vicki- It is.

    Beachreader- Glad you stopped by.

Louise- It is a weird word but funny.

    Bermudaonion- Glad you liked it.

    Fiction-books- I agree,they are strange words.
