Skating With The Stars 11-30-10 Show

I have to say that the stars on this show are very brave to be out there on the ice dancing, I can't even stand up on skates. They must have a lot of black and blue injuries. One star got voted off last night ,Sean, who was very determined. I give her a lot of credit for even attempting the show.

Teaser Tuesday - The Wolves of Andover by Kathleen Kent

Here is my teaser from The Wolves of Andover by Kathleen Kent (Page 8):

Martha saw it all clear in that moment: this was the instant her place in the family would be decided. If she lost her footing at the outset, she would forever be dealt with as no more than a servant.

Mailbox Monday - Season of Seduction & A Very Simple Crime

I received for review Season of Seduction by Jennifer Haymore from The Book Tree.

Although the widowed Lady Rebecca has sworn off marriage, men are another matter. London's cold winter nights have her dreaming of warmer pursuits-like finding a lover to satisfy her hungry heart. Someone handsome, discreet, and most importantly as uninterested in marriage as she is. Someone like Jack Fulton.

A known adventurer and playboy, Jack seems like the perfect choice. There's just one problem: Jack isn't interested in an affair. He needs the beautiful, mysterious Lady Rebecca to be his wife. And he doesn't have much time to persuade her. A secret from Jack's past is about to surface, and by Christmas Day he'll be either married to Rebecca or dead.

I received for review A Very Simple Crime by Grant Jerkins from Berkley Trade.

A twisting debut novel of murder and dark family secrets from a riveting new voice in crime fiction.

A murdered woman. A grieving husband. And their son-a mentally handicapped adult with a history of violent outbursts. A very simple case. Or is it?

Leo Hewitt, an Assistant DA once blamed for setting free a notorious child-killer, is eager to redeem himself with this intimate and grisly crime. As he digs below the surface he discovers more than he ever anticipated-including an emotionally disturbed wife, a husband who'd do anything to escape his disastrous marriage, and an accused young man with no apparent means of defense. But with each shocking new revelation, Leo is only led deeper and deeper into the darkness-an inescapable trap of blood bonds and twisted family secrets.

Paranormal State 11-28-10 episode

Ryan and the team set out to investigate a house where a young boy was murdered on Halloween night. The people living in the house now claim strange things happening with the front door, apparantly it would lock itself, and open strangely on it's own. That is where the boy got shot trick or treating.
The other case involved a farmhouse haunting in pa. A beam of light seem to be appearing
to the people living there.
While Ryan was investigating , something came down on it's own off the lighting fixture, they ran the tape & witnessed it happening.

Dancing With The Stars 11-23-10 Results show

Finally , the votes are in and it was right on, Jennifer deservedly won the trophy. My favorite and very entertaining Kyle came in second, and Bristol third. It was nerve racking for everyone to see which way the voting would go, this time it came out 100% right.
I was sorry to see it end like everyone else, but I bet the stars were glad to rest their tired and weary bodies, and get back to their families.

Mailbox Monday - Witchgrass and The Storm Before Atlanta

I received for review Witchgrass: A Pipe Dream by Dave Wilkinson from the author.

***
New novel lampoons Drug War. WITCHGRASS: a pipe dream, a novel by Dave Wilkinson portrays shattered lives and conflicted families as a New England town splits apart. What if a Vietnam helicopter suddenly landed in your back yard? The town of New Salem, Maine faces an invasion of military operations, secret spies and child-parent betrayal that sets a peaceful rural county spinning. Carolyn Chute, author of best-selling The Beans of Egypt, Maine, "cry-laughed and laugh-cried through a book more important than most of what they give kids to read in school." Witchgrass: a pipe dream sweeps the reader into a quiet world turned upside down by the War on Drugs. An afternoon invasion becomes a multi-faceted dramedy as marijuana-hunting helicopters cause confusion and panic one summer during the early 1990s. School children, sheriffs, professors and prosecutors play their parts in a story about one of America's major social issues. Emotions boil in the culture clash over cannabis, a matter which divides parent from child, employee from company, husband from wife. As the story comes to its unexpected and riotous climax, Maine in the Bush One era becomes a positive vision of future enlightenment. In its non-judgmental portrayal of cannabis users, this novel brightens the image of much-maligned pot smokers.

I received for review The Storm Before Atlanta by Karen Schwabach from Random House.

At a time when most people have grown weary of the war between the states, two young children are desperate to find their way to the battlefields. Jeremy DeGroot wants nothing more than to join a troop as a drummer boy. For Dulcie, a runaway slave, freedom means she must head directly toward the fighting in the hopes that she'll become "contraband," that is, property of the Union troops. Both Jeremy and Dulcie find a place with the 107th New York Volunteer Regiment and even start to forge a friendship. But all that is threatened when they keep crossing paths with the mysterious Charlie, a young Confederate soldier, who may look like the enemy but feels more like a friend.

Teaser Tuseday - The Lodestone Book One: The Sea of Storms

Here is my teaser from The Lodestone Book One: The Sea of Storms by Mark Whiteway (Prologue):

It was early in the afternoon, when Kal first saw the flying rock.

Well, perhaps "flying" was a slight exaggeration; a subtle embellishment that he might have used later when trying to impress his younger brother, or his friends after third-day prayers. It was a least enough to break Kal out of his reverie. Hymarr's reaction was the last thing he had expected.

He has been rehearsing in his mind for days beforehand how he would ask her to accompany him to the Spring Gratitude Service. That morning, as he lay in his bedchamber, before even Ali-Gan, the yellow sun, has risen over the western horizon, he determined that today was going to be the day.

Cyrilla Barr - The Trophy Bride's Tale - Review

"I have never seen an execution" are the opening words of The Trophy Bride's Tale by Cyrilla Barr. The main character Prudenza is beheaded on August 10, 1549. As a young innocent girl, she gets caught up in her father's misled business affair with Matteo Cecchi, and ends up marrying Matteo as part of the bargain.

After years of horrible abuse, Prudenza ends up poisoning him with a potion made from ingredients taken from her herb garden. She is driven to commit murder in order to protect her children. In an insane fit of jealousy, Matteo even smashes Prudenza's treasured lute, a cherished gift from her father.

Her faithful and trusted servant, Gina, is a witness to the cruelty they endure. Fra Tommaso, a priest, whom Prudenza met while in a convent school offers his support during her trial and subsequent execution. Her final words are to him: "Thank you! You have taught me well, Father. You have led me from my bondage and set me free."

Overall, I love the genre of historical fiction and I loved this book.

Ken Dalton - The Big Show Stopper - Review

Summary (from Goodreads.com)

The Big Show Stopper
opens in a packed concert arena with everyone waiting for the entrance of Brady Blackstone, the richest, and premier concert performer in America. But before Brady sets his foot on the stage, a tragic accident takes his life in front of Bear and a devastated Flo. However, it does not take Bear and Flo very long to question if the death was it an accident or murder?

Once again, in the pursuit of a pile of money and a little justice, Pinky travels to an exotic site while Bear and Flo end up in one of the least desirable locations in California.

The Big Show Stopper brings back Pinky, Bear, Flo, along with a gaggle of quirky characters. A beer swilling wacko. A naked old fart. A couple of downright dangerous folks. And concludes on a dark night with the dynamic trio spread eagle counting down the final seconds of their lives.

Review

The Big Show Stopper
by Ken Dalton begins with the murder of Brady Blackstone, a rockstar. At times raw - the plot gains momentum at the halfway mark. It revolves around Pinky, a lawyer and Jack, the boyfriend of Brady's adulterous wife, Lucinda. Jack becomes the main suspect in Brady's murder. The three are intertwined in this mystery. Not to mention, Carson, the crooked cop, who kills people and tries to get away with it.

My husband, Jim read the book and shared his thoughts with me for this review. He told me he looks forward to reading Dalton's first book,
Praise For The Bloody Birthwright.

Overall, it kept his interest down to the last page.

The Big Show Stopper
by Ken Dalton is available for $14.95 at Amazon.com and at KenDalton.com.
