My Book Blog Follow Friday

If you have, or would have a daughter, what book would you want your daughter to read?

Without a doubt, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. I gave my daughter the copy I was given when I was 10-years-old. We even visited the Alcott's Orchard House this past summer up in Concord, Mass. together.

I would love to go on a Jane Austen tour! It includes tours of Chawton, Winchester Cathedral, the Vine and Jane Austen Centre in England. And you get to see he main house where the little-known romance between Jane Austen and the dashing Irish lawyer, Tom Lafroy, took place.

Gretchen wins Project Runway - shocker!

Wow - what an upset! Gretchen with a bland (could there be any more brown?) and unflattering (those diaper shorts, ugh!) collection won Project Runway season eight. A week ago, Nina Garcia and Michael Kors lambasted the designs only to become their ardent champion during the finale. How could they have so decidedly changed their mind in such a short period of time? Admittedly, they saw more of Gretchen's work at Lincoln Center, but the added pieces were only more lackluster.

Nina kept referring to the fact that she didn't want the winner's style to look "like a circus." She even mentioned last season's winner, Seth Aaron, with a sort of shudder. One wonders if the fashion world is being unkind to Ms. Garcia and her affiliation with the reality show. Are the high and mighty looking down their noses at her involvement in such a spectacle? Does she feel her reputation is on the line in regards to the winner?

Michael Kors also had his feathers ruffled when Jessica Simpson dared to utter the slanderous words of a designer "only" designing sportswear. Since Michael is the self-proclaimed king of American sportswear, did he go to battle for Gretchen because Jessica preferred Mondo? It's interesting to note that Jessica's clothing/accessories line probably provides some competition in the sportswear arena - something Michael might resent. Especially since Jessica is a starlet who attaches her name to a line and not an actual designer.

Poor Mondo got caught in the crossfire. His collection sparkled and dazzled on the runway. It was interesting. It caught your eye. It had a joyful feeling to it. It looked inspired. Even Andy - who was quickly relegated to third place - had some standouts - the one shoulder dresses were outstanding.

I'm glad that Heidi and Jessica passionately made a case for Mondo, even if it was to no avail. I agreed with Heidi's remark to Nina and Michael that they encouraged him all season long only to let him down at the end. That wasn't fair. What they loved in all of the previous challenges suddenly wasn't good enough?

Well I wish Gretchen all the success in the world, but if she made a line like her "Running Through Thunder" collection for Macy's or QVC, I don't think I'd buy it.

Paranormal State - Ryan & Lorraine in person and Spirits in the Slave Dungeon & Ghost on the Tracks

The second week of the 5th season of Paranormal State turned out to be interesting - especially after attending a lecture by Ryan Burell and Lorraine Warren on the 22nd at Penn State Scranton Worthington campus. This was the first time the two ever gave a talk together, and they spoke for over three hours.

Ryan had many funny behind-the-scenes moments from the show. In the "Smoke and Mirrors" episode, the Vietnam vet came downstairs where the girls had bunked and stared at Katrina for half an hour. Also, when Ryan was making $150 a week as a college student, the Paranormal Research Society used to go to Wal-Mart, buy equipment and then return it within 30 days. He also talked about how he stayed in Pittsburgh to attend an exorcism and missed out on taking his final exams while a student at Penn State. His mother was not too happy that the $10,000 loan she took out for the semester's tuition went for nothing.

Lorriane was a treat. It turns out her maiden name is the same as my mother-in-law's family - Moran. She was cold in the auditorium and asked Ryan to give her his coat - which he put around her shoulders like a gentleman. A member of the crowd asked Lorraine if she could see the auras of everyone in the crowd, and she responded, "No honey, I have to concentrate on a particular person." She was joined by her son-in-law who showed a documentary from the 1980s that aired on CBS of Lorraine and her late husband, Ed. He also showed a real life exorcism of a Canadian farmer. Lorraine and Ed are famous for their work on the Amityville Horror case. She talked about a whirlwind following her to her bedroom paralyzing her. Also, she said that while her and Ed were driving between Lord's Valley and Promised Land State Park in Pennsylvania that they joked that Amityville couldn't touch them here. Next thing they knew their car was spun around and thrown over an embankment. She is one brave woman.

The first episode of the week was "Spirits in the Slave Dungeon." Ryan, Sergey, Josh and Michelle traveled to the old Charleston jail where they were reprimanded by an African American shaman for making a mockery of the dead. Ryan agreed and they confronted the tour manager saying that respect needed to be shown by the tourists walking in with their fanny packs snapping pictures.

The second episode marked the return of Katrina. This time the gang investigated a New Jersey beauty salon in "Ghost on the Tracks." Since a mother and daughter were killed when a train dragged their car through the intersection near the salon, that became the focus of their efforts. It seems that train tracks are similar to ley lines allowing spirit energy a pathway to travel.

I remember back in 1989 when that accident occurred. It was featured on the news because it was the first run of an 80 mph speed train that would carry gamblers to Atlantic City. It is awful what happened to that family.

The episode ended on a lighter note when the members of PRS were treated to some pampering at the salon.

Rocky Horror Glee Show - Kurt's costume was the best part

I am not a fan of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. To me, the movie doesn't make sense. I guess that's why this wasn't one of my favorite episodes of Glee. But I did like the cast's rendition of "Time Warp Tango." Kurt's (Chris Colfer) costume was fantastic - he really embodied the creepy, spooky character with his herky-jerky movements.

It was funny to see Finn obsess about his belly fat. I read an article in Vogue where Matthew Morrison admitted to spending an exorbitant amount of time working on his abdominals. Maybe it's an inside Glee joke.

This season of Glee is a bit all over the place. It's good to see some of the story lines coming together. When Puck returns, things should get interesting between Sam and Quinn. And it looks like a Bon Jovi week is on the horizon.

Are Jennifer & Derek really in the bottom two on Dancing with the Stars?

It's interesting that Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke said that either Audrina/Tony or Jennifer/Derek were out, but it didn't necessarily mean the couple that survived was in the bottom two. Is Dancing with the Stars trying to create controversy? It seems hard to believe that a front-runner would end up close to elimination two weeks in a row. I think they really are trying to give Jennifer Grey a nervous breakdown.

While there may have been a frantic quality to Jennifer and Derek's Rock Week dance, she is trying to regain her top spot and fend off a much younger pack of contenders. Not to mention the pressure on Derek who has been on a streak of perfection since last season with winner Nicole Scherzinger.

Dancing with the Stars is the reigning number one show in the country. ABC wants to keep it that way, and probably gives the producers an earful on maintaining the drama - real or manufactured.

Stay tuned, crazier things can happen - like Bristol Palin winning.

On The Road With Austin and Santino

Last night, the two roving designers were on their way to design a dress for the lady who takes care of the wolves aka the wolf lady, or as they called her The Wolf Goddess. I was surprised to see them get in the fenced in area with the wolves, and howl until they were joined in by them,it was very funny. The lady, having never worn lipstick in her life, had Austin apply it to her lips. She knew what she wanted in color and design of the dress, and they made it beautifully, she looked great. Her family came to the party, along with her daughter who just arrived from Afghanistan. Santino came in at the end of the show with a tractor full of food for the wolves.

The Office-10-21-10-Episode

Michael had to come to the rescue of Dwight and Jim to save an account being taken by a handsome, savvy sales rep from another paper co.He failed to do so,and proceeded to spy on the salesman's technique, but failed again. Michael then ends up hiring him, with higher pay, much to the dismay of the others.

Project Runway-10-21-10 Show

Again, I wasn't surprised when Gretchen, Mondo, & Andy were the chosen three to go to fashion week. Michael took it pretty hard at getting rejected.I liked his collection the best. The styling @ color were beautiful. Too bad we didn't see the rest of it.The other collections were too way out there for me, but I think Mondo will be the winner.

Ghost Hunters, TAPS 10-20-10 episode

The team last night investigated an old building, which is now used mainly for storage. In it were old car parts and some cars, one floor was filled with tire rims and hub caps, which were believed to be making clanking sounds, but none were heard. The client was said to have been choked by a black shadowy figure, which passed right through him. More to come next week.

Two of my favorite authors

Maeve Binchy's books transport you right into Ireland and the way of life there, that draws you into her world. She keeps her characters familiar from book to book, so you instantly feel like getting into her next novel. If you never read her before, start with her first book, Light A Penny Candle.

Sidney Sheldon was a very exciting author, known for his blockbuster novels. He relates to women a lot and seems to attract that audience. His plots are exciting and I defy you to want to put the book down.

Dancing With The Stars 10-20-10 show

Wow! what a shock last night, the two on the bottom of the board got saved and Florence and Corky got voted off, and they did a good dance number too. We will have to watch Bristol perform again and see what happens. I'm not the only one surprised, how about you? That show is full of surprises, it's all up to the people voting.

Dancing With The Stars 10-18-10 Show

I thought most of the dancers danced really well, except for Bristol. Even the monkey suits couldn't save her from her dancing techniques. Max and Brandy landed on top of the board, which was well deserved, they seem to be getting along better. If Bristol isn't voted off tonight, I'll be very surprised.

The Town

This movie, The Town, was filled with action and excitement. It starred Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner and John Hamn. It's all about bank robbers terrorizing Boston. John Hamn, from Mad Men(Don) is the FBI agent, who through his tenacity, tracks them down. If you want a high powered chase through the streets of Boston movie, this is it. Does anyone get away? See it and find out.

Parnormal State-10-17-10 Episode

Ryan investigated an old house that seemed to be haunted by a woman who was held captive by a relative in her house, in the masterbedroom, and not allowed to leave the room for 6 months prior to her death. After doing some research, he called in the niece of the woman to see if he could get her spirit to move on,along with some physics. With a re-creation of the bedroom scene , the niece tried to persuade the woman's spirit to leave the house and she then walked out the front door with her. After that they all seemed to be at peace, hopefully it worked. The other case was a home haunted by little beings called pukwudgies, tricksters. The family was told to plant a strawberry vine out in the bushes of their backyard, to get rid of them, but it seems it didn't last too long.

Mad Men-10-17-10 Episode

Well talk about twists and turns, Don's trip to California proved to be a surprise. He gets engaged to his secretary after knowing her for a very short time, proved to be a shocker to everyone. The scene at the end looks like he is having his doubts already. Don Draper lives for the moment and maybe it has passed. I also think Betty is feeling guilty about the boy next door and took it out on her maid by firing her.I can't wait until they return again to see what happens.

Project Runway-10-14-10

No surprises for me who the finalists were going to be last night. the only one was Gretchen, who has a mind of her own and speaks up readily, especially where Heidi is concerned. The outfit she made was different from the others, it was more street sporty. She could have been easily eliminated.Time will tell as they go off to design their own collection.I love this part where Tim has to visit them in their own personal space.

Taps Episode-10-13-10

The Taps team investigated the James Thurber House, and the Canfield Casino at Saratoga Springs on last nights show. The creaking floor boards in dining room of the Thurber house seemed to be the cause of someone coming up the staircase. that one was debunked, but the mysterious mantle clock case opening on it's own couldn't be , no reason was found. The casino had a roulette wheel spinning around on it's own at times. But again the show was filled with them saying- did you hear that? I wonder some times if these faint sounds are really the spirits. But I have to say, the show has me watching every week. Believe it or not.

The White Queen by Phillippa Gregory

I am responding to tweets that I have been getting about The White Queen by Philippa Gregory. I am almost half way through it, and liking it, I really enjoy historical fiction. Elizabeth Woodville, who is now the Queen of England is in sanctuary, while her husband King Edward is out fighting The War of The Roses. They are never sure of keeping the throne in that time period. It does hold your attention, with every thing going on. As I read on, I am sure there are more twists and turns to come.

Dancing With The Stars 10-13-10 episode

Well, last night it was between Bristol and The Situation leaving, and I think the two of them should have left at once. The show is meant to teach you to dance not have someone lead you around the floor with the pro doing all the dancing.Just dues were given and next week we will have to watch Bristol get through another week. I hope the other dance floor is back , I was having fears of some of them landing into the audience.

Glee-10-13-10 Episode

I thought some of the duets last night were great, and some not so great. Finn and Rachel wanted to be the best and win and they were as far as I was concerned. Kurt sang with Rachel but it didn't go over with me that well, maybe didn't like the tune.Too bad Puck was out of the picture,I enjoy him and his singing .The show on the whole was far better than last week. In my opinion it got back to being a show entertaining people.

Dancing With The Stars 10-11-10 show

The new stage in the round proved to be challenging for the dancers, besides learning the new dance. Jennifer Grey and Derrick were outstanding, practically flawless and got a couple of tens from the judges. Florence and Corky did a little racy dance , much to the judges surprise and proved age sometimes doesn't hold you back. You can definitely see who the front runners are at this point, unless there is a dramatic improvement in the bottom three. We will see tonight on the results show, after they were judged on technique and performance.

Mad Men- 10-10-10 Episode

Things seem to be getting worse for Don and his team, he tried putting a negative tobacco ad in the paper to see where it went, but everyone else at the office didn't approve. Don's daughter got found out by her mother about being friends with the boy next door, and was was told to stay away from him, that he is a bad boy. Betty expressed to her husband that she thinks it's time to move and her daughter did not like it at all. The last minutes of the show was the firing of a lot of the employees, they were like lambs going to the slaughter. The season ends next week, as usual it should be filled with more twists and turns.

Project Runway -10-8-10 episode

Very nerve racking for the designers on yesterday's show, they had to design three sportswear outfits for Heidi's clothing line. She came in unnannounced yo critique their work, which got a few of them angry, feelings and emotions were running high, especially with Mondo and Gretchen, it seems they can't take correction too well, and it was pointed out to them. In the end Andy won and Christopher got voted off and now there are 5 left.

Ghost Hunters-10-06-10-Episode

Grant and Jay and the team were investigating an old school from the 1800's, but now is used as a glass warehouse. Reports of apparitions, strange sounds and voices seemed to be everywhere. some very loud bangs and crashes at times, but they couldn't find the reason why. But in the end a lot of it corresponded with what other people heard. As usual it was a good investigation for them.

Dancing With The Stars - 10/5 episode recap

Michael Bolton entertained us with his singing, Mark and Max's brother also added to the show with their competition of dancing and playing of guitar and violin, very energetic and good show from both of them. Margaret Cho and Louie got voted off, but I have to say she improved from the very first performance. As the weeks go on it will get harder and the competing tougher, but it will make for a good show. They will all have to do their very best to impress the judges and get the votes.

Dancing With The Stars - 10/4 episode recap

Apparently, Max was called out by one of the judges last night, but tried to uphold his method, it was still a good performance. Jennifer Grey was great but didn't get top spot, Tony and his partner got that. I enjoyed them all, it takes a lot of very hard work to do that every week, considering the different age groups on the show. Michael Bolton may be singing on the result show tonight. He is back doing what he does best.

Paranormal State - new book by Ryan Buell

After reading Paranormal State it gave me a further insight into the intensity of the different cases and much more behind the scenes that the team has to deal with concerning keeping the show real and true. The show sparks my interest as far as paranormal incidents are concerned, which I never bothered to look at before. Looking forward to the new season starting Sunday, October 17 at 9 p.m.

Buy the book at Amazon.

Mad Men - my thoughts on 10/3 episode

It looks like Don Draper is up to his old tricks with his secretaries again. After losing a major account, and trying to regroup to save other accounts, and babies being born, life goes on and business as usual for Sterling, Cooper. The writing on the show is great , it keeps you very interested and wanting for more.Although only a few more shows left before the season ends, it will be interesting to see what happens next.
